Landauer Theory, Inelastic Scattering and Electron Transport in Molecular Wires

چکیده
In this paper we address the topic of inelastic electron scattering in mesoscopic quantum transport. For systems where only elastic scattering is present, Landauer theory provides an adequate description of transport that relates the electronic current to single-particle transmission and reflection probabilities. A formalism proposed recently by Bonc̆a and Trugman facilitates the calculation of the one-electron transmission and reflection probabilities for inelastic processes in mesoscopic conductors connected to onedimensional ideal leads. Building on their work, we have developed a selfconsistent procedure for the evaluation of the non-equilibrium electron distributions in ideal leads connecting such mesoscopic conductors to electron reservoirs at finite temperatures and voltages. We evaluate the net electronic current flowing through the mesoscopic device by utilizing these non-equilibrium distributions. Our approach is a generalization of Landauer theory that takes account of the Pauli exclusion principle for the various competing elastic and inelastic processes while satisfying the requirement of particle conservation. As an application we examine the influence of elastic and inelastic scattering on conduction through a two site molecular wire with longitudinal phonons

Coherent electron-phonon coupling and polaron-like transport in molecular wires
We present a technique to calculate the transport properties through onedimensional models of molecular wires. The calculations include inelastic electron scattering due to electron-lattice interaction. The coupling between the electron and the lattice is crucial to determine the transport properties in one-dimensional systems subject to Peierls transition since it drives the transition itself....

متن کاملCharge Transport Through Single Molecules: Different Theoretical Approaches
Two different methods which allow to calculate electric current through molecular junctions are compared. The first method is based on the scattering theory and Landauer formula, and the second on the master equation technique. Two models of the junction with different molecular bridges (with and without an internal vibrational degree of freedom) were used to compare and discuss features of bot...

We extend the Landauer-Büttiker probe formalism for conductances to the high bias regime and study the effects of environmentally induced elastic and inelastic scattering on charge current in single molecule junctions, focusing on high-bias effects. The probe technique phenomenologically incorporates incoherent elastic and inelastic effects to the fully coherent case, mimicking a rich physical ...
متن کاملRole of inelastic electron–phonon scattering in electron transport through ultra-scaled amorphous phase change material nanostructures
The electron transport through ultra-scaled amorphous phase change material (PCM) GeTe is investigated by using ab initio molecular dynamics, density functional theory, and non-equilibrium Green’s function, and the inelastic electron–phonon scattering is accounted for by using the Born approximation. It is shown that, in ultra-scaled PCM device with 6 nm channel length, <4 % of the energy carri...
